How to Play Euchre

Euchre is a four player game consisting of two groups of partners playing against one another. The game is played with a 24 card deck that consists of the A, K, Q, J, 10, and 9 of each of the four suits. In each round a certain suit is considered trump, the jack of that suit is the highest possible of all cards and the other jack of the same color as the trump suit is the second highest of all cards. The remaining cards are ranked in order of Ace, King, Non Trump Jack, Ten and Nine with nine being the lowest.

The goal of the game is to make tricks.

This game uses a dealer button which rotates around the table each deal. Each player received five cards and an additional card is placed in the middle of the table. Starting with the player to the left of the dealer, and then rotating clockwise should the player before them pass, players are given the option to declare either Pass, Order up and Go Alone. When selecting Order up or Go Alone the player is choosing to take the card on the center of the table in exchange for one of their current cards also making that cards suit the trump card.

If a player chooses order up they and their partner must win three or more ticks to get a point. If they win all five tricks they receive two points, if they win 2 or less tricks they are what’s called euchred and their opponents receive two points.

When players have an exceptionally good hand they can chose go alone and in this case their partner drops their cards, sitting out the hand, while they go against their two opponents. The scoring remains the same as order up with the exception being if the player going alone makes all five tricks their team scores 4 points instead of two.

If all players have passed each player is then given the opportunity to declare a new suit as trump.

Playing the game:
The player who selected the trump suit plays first, by putting on card into play. Action then goes clock wise around the table with each player playing a card of the same suit. If the player has no cards of that suit they can play any card including trump. One point worth noting is the second highest trump card (the other jack of the same color as the trump suit trump) is considered to be a card of the trump suit rather than its face suit.

After each player has played his card, the trick is won by the player who played the highest card of the lead suit, unless trump has been played which in that case the player to have played the highest trump card wins the trick. This process repeats with the winner of the previous trick leading the next card.

Winning the Game:
The first team to reach ten or more points wins the game.
